How information about you helps us to provide better care - NHS England
Confidential information from your medical records can be used by the NHS to improve the services offered so we can provide the best possible care for everyone.

This information along with your postcode and NHS number but not your name, are sent to a secure system where it can be linked with other health information. This allows those plannning NHS services or carrying out medical research to use information from different parts of the NHS in a way which does not identify you.

You have a choice. If you are happy for your information to be used in this way you do not have to do anything.

Welcome to South Hylton Surgery


We are pleased to announce that from 1st November 2019 the management of South Hylton Surgery will transfer to Sunderland GP Alliance Limited.  South Hylton Surgery will continue to provide services as normal up until 31st October 2019.

There will be no gap in provision of services from your current GP practice provider to Sunderland GP Alliance Limited, and you will not need to take any action as you will continue to be registered at your practice.

Both staff and patients will be the key focus for the transfer of service.  To help support the transition, we will be working closely with all parties concerned in an effort to ensure the handover is completed as smoothly as it is intended.

From 1st November 2019, we will continue to work with staff and patients to further enhance the services provided.

Formed in 2015, Sunderland GP Alliance is an organisation owned by the GP Practices in Sunderland and it exists to help GP’s work together for the benefit of patients and staff.  Thirty six of the City’s forty practices are members of the organisation, and together cover around 95% of Sunderland’s patients.   Sunderland GP Alliance works on a not-for-profit basis, ensuring any surplus is reinvested back in General Practice to improve services for patients.

Organisations such as ours help General Practice respond to the changing needs of the health system.  Many services we currently provide cannot be delivered by individual GP practices.

We are governed by an elected Board of Directors, made up of GP’s, Nurses and a Practice Manager all currently working at surgeries within the City.  Between them, they have a vast amount of experience about how best to look after our patients to make sure they receive the best possible care.

The current services we cover are:-


We provide a highly successful and popular Extended Access service which offers patient access to GP appointments Monday to Friday 6pm until 8.30pm, weekend 9am -5.30pm and Bank Holidays.  The service is delivered out of five sites across the City.


We are an established provider of GP Services at four locations within the City covering around 24,000 patients. Sunderland GP Alliance also operates services out of Pallion HC for patients removed from practice lists due to violent incidents.


We have been inspected by CQC and assessed as good with areas of outstanding.


Finally, we would like to thank patients and staff for their patience and understanding throughout.  We have added a patient frequently asked questions (FAQ’s) page for patients to refer to with any queries.   This will be updated with any further questions we receive over the coming weeks.  Alongside this we will also be attending the Patient Participation Group to facilitate any further questions you may have, but please feel free to contact me with any queries.

We will also place a box and cards within the practice for you to post any queries.

Urgent care services in Sunderland are changing


Patients in Sunderland will be able to access NHS urgent care services more simply and closer to home after 1 August 2019.


From 1 August 2019, the best way to access NHS urgent care services will be to contact your GP practice or local pharmacy, or call NHS 111 when they are closed.


Urgent care is for minor injuries or illnesses which need medical attention the same day, but are not serious enough for the Emergency Department.


From 1 August 2019, these will be the main urgent care services for patients in Sunderland:


  • GP practices – collectively providing extra appointments in evenings, weekends and bank holidays. These can be booked through your GP practice, at one of five locations around Sunderland, Washington and Houghton.
  • Pharmacists - local pharmacists are highly trained and provide free, confidential advice on minor illnesses from sickness and diarrhoea to hay fever.
  • Urgent care centres at Pallion or Bunny Hill health centres, open 10am-10pm Monday to Friday; 8am-10pm weekends and bank holidays, no appointment needed.
  • NHS 111 - if you have an urgent need which is not life-threatening, NHS 111 health advisors are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to help you get the right medical attention for your needs.

Disabled Facilities

All facilities in the practice are on ground floor level including a disabled toilet. There is a ramp at the entrance of the building providing access for patients using a wheelchair

Our new MJOG text messaging app allows you to receive text messages and appointment reminders. To download this simply type in 'MJOG' into your app store.

Car Parking
The car parks are private property and are managed by Horizon Parking Ltd on behalf of the owners of the building. The car parks are managed by a mobile parking attendant. A parking charge notice of £80 will be issued in circumstances which are detailed in the signs which are displayed in the car parks.
